Intensive
The Intensive program incorporates the Urban Improv model, methodology, and staff
with the therapeutic expertise of the Trauma Center clinicians. This
ensemble, combining Urban Improv actors and educators with Trauma
Center clinicians, works directly with students and has undergone extensive
cross-training to be able to provide a fully integrated, clinically-informed,
improvisational theater-based program.
Each of the 24 week sessions
includes an opening circle, therapeutic exercises, theater-based improvisation
scenes, and a closing circle. The program proceeds through 4 Skills
Building Phases, targeting different themes and associated skills. These
Skills Phases are addressed through modification of the standard Urban
Improv workshop session format to include trauma-informed exercises
and therapeutic games in addition to improvisational skits and group
scenes. Each phase is designed to teach, build upon, and reinforce
skills, and to provide a non-judgmental environment of safety and security.
- The Safety and Skills
Building Phase (7 sessions) targets themes such as trust building, self-regulation,
emotional awareness, expression, and regulation, and interpersonal skills.
- Skills Application:
Youth Conflict Phase (4 weeks) targets managing stress and peer pressure,
issues of prejudice and racism, and relationship challenges such as
sexual harassment and homophobia.
- Skills Application:
Youth Trauma Phase (8 weeks) addresses themes of relationship violence,
family neglect, sexual abuse, depression, drugs and crime, and violence
perpetration and homicide.
- Skills Generalization

building community, and self-identity and future goals.
